Nintendo finally took its turn to reveal how it went in the last quarter financially speaking and while many have the idea who the hero was, it is time to actually see it by the numbers and expectations for the future.
Profit for Nintendo in their first quarter of current Fiscal Year 2024 reached of 185.4bn yen (or $1.294 billions), which is a whooping positive of 82% compared to last year and surpasses the the record set by Animal Crossing: New Horizons at 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic period.
As you can guess, the main driver was the The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom hype, which includes 3.91 million Nintendo Switch units, which is up 13.9% year-on-year and brings the life-to-date total to 129.53 million.
Nintendo reported that 86% of the units were OLED models, including the special edition Tears of the Kingdom console, which launched in April.
As for the game itself it has sold 18.51 million units, including the 10 million units in the first three days and unsurprisingly, the game is already on the top 10 sold games for Nintendo Switch.
The list as of Q1 2024 is as follows:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 55.46m (+1.67m)
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 42.79m (+0.58m)
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 31.77m (+0.68m)
- Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 30.65m (+0.84m)
- Super Mario Odyssey – 26.44m (+0.68m)
- Pokemon Sword/Shield – 25.92m (+0.1m)
- Pokémon Scarlet & Violet – 22.66m (+0.56)
- Super Mario Party – 19.39m (+0.35m)
- Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – 18.51m (NEW)
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe – 16.17 (+0.76m)
Nintendo forecasts it will sell 15 million consoles during the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, which represents a further 16.5% decline, as Switch enters a significant slowdown during its seventh year on the market.
Of course, there were no reactions to the rumors that Nintendo might be already talking about the Nintendo Switch successor in early 2024 with a release in the second half of the same year and as of the writing of this, key partners already have devs kits to have games ready for launch day.
