Hi all - I'm lucky enough to have a very interesting house-mate. Although he's now in his 70s, he used to work in the media as a journalist, then TV advert maker, TV producer, director and documentary maker. Now retired, he still finds time to do occasional design work for clients.

Why is this interesting? Well, in the late '80s, he and his team were the first Western crew to be allowed into the USSR to make a TV series about ordinary family life behind the Iron Curtain, without any government control! This allowed the Western world to see the Soviets as people, just like themselves.

For some time, I've been trying to persuade him to put the series on YouTube, and a few days ago, he and his business partner agreed for me to do so. I'd like to share it with you, so feel free to check out the entire Icebreaker series there!

Icebreaker Productions
Icebreaker is a television documentary series released internationally in 1992 that was a world first. Its production team were the first film crew in the world ever to be given complete editorial freedom by the Soviet Union, the confederation of communist states that formed post-war Russia. The series broke new ground in the western world by showing the people of the Soviet Union without any political slant, and its international release played a part in changing the West’s attitudes to the Soviet Union, and literally ‘broke the ice’ of what was then known as ‘The Cold War’.
