Well, the second attempt of Super Mario Bros. by Hollywood will not happen this year as, kinda expected to be honest, Illumination (probably backed and pressured by Universal Pictures) has decided to delay the movie premier by April 2023, instead of December 2022.
This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.

Actually the news came from the same Shiguery Miyamoto of Nintendo after talking with Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, instead of a traditional press release that since the pandemic started have become a trend to major movies avoiding going directly to streaming service and attempt to have a full season on theaters.
But more than being cautious of re-spike of COVID-19 infections, the move appears to be more in the post-production of the movie and is not advancing as much as it was hoped for.
Apparently this will give time to polish the movie and probably add new scenes or features to enrich the movie.
