It was the 6th weekend of The Super Mario Bros. as the movie was beginning to arrive on paid on-demand service, prior to physical medium release, the first product of Nintendo and Illumination collaboration set a few more records.
Officially, The Super Mario Bros. Movie closed its theater-only showing as the most grossing movie ever for Illumination.
Also, the movie is officially the fifth-biggest animated movie in history, behind The Lion King remake ($1.6 billion), Frozen 2 ($1.4 billion), Frozen ($1.28 billion) and Incredibles 2 ($1.24 billion).
For this 6th weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has grossed $536 million domestically, and another $674 million from overseas markets, for a running global haul of $1.21 billion which it will not be surprising that it can escalate even further the above mentioned statistic.
For Illumination Entertainment, it means that The Super Mario Bros. Movie now has the 1st place for best animated movie, followed by Minions ($1.157 billion) and Despicable Me 3 ($1.032 billion).
GG for this achievement and a great example on how a gaming based movie can be great if Hollywood is more willing on being less-Hollywood.
