A surprise announcement was made and maybe a little unceremoniously as Summer Game Fest should have served as a better announcing platform, but Facebook parent company Meta has announced the next-gen of Oculus VR headset and glasses, Oculus Ques 3.
Meta confirmed that the design of Oculus Quest 3 allowed the headset to be lighter and more comfortable, with a “40 percent slimmer optic profile”.
Meta did not go deep on spec of the Oculus Quest 3, but promised a big jump in performance against the Quest 2 with a next-gen Qualcomm processor, which some are speculating it can be the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, able to have the point of view of the user with a 2064 × 2208 resolution per eye at 120Hz of image update frequency.
A jab against PSVR2 is that the Oculus Quest 2 games can be played with no problem with Quest 3.
Oculus Quest 3 is coming this fall with a 128GB version available for $499.99 and there will be an additional storage option for those who want more space at an unspecified price and meanwhile, Oculus Quest 2 receives a price cut to $299.99 for the 128GB version and $349.99 for the 256GB version.
Finally, Meta is thinking about the hardworking developers that have accepted on buying the Quest Pro as via Software update, will increase their CPU and GPU performance and enable Dynamic Resolution Scaling which can improve development opportunities and better tuning of apps and games.
While many can think that not only foregoing Summer Game Fest is strange enough and while this is seen as a preemptive strategy to whatever Apple is ready to announce on WWDC 23 with “VR/AR by Apple”, Meta promises a whole presentation prior officially launching Quest 2 on September 27th on the event Meta Connect.
