For gamers that know that Xbox practically found new ways to bring games with not so much compromise and less only in the long term with Xbox Games Pass and while I don’t want to recapitulate everything that has led this gaming ala carté subscription service, many expected that Playstaiton would answer 100%.
Well not quite.
While it is true that PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium do have gaming a la carté, the only missing piece is the Day One releases, specially from Playstation Studios family games.
Unfortunately, those eager to hear/see/read a “yes” from Sony, better luck in another opportunity.
Sony Interactive Entertainment Vice President and global head of subscriptions Nick Maguire told GamesIndustry.biz that their data show that Playstation gamers are willing to buy games on launch day to play and that doesn’t justify a Day One launch on PS Plus tiers.
“We’re happy with our strategy.
Putting games in a bit later in the life cycle has meant that we can reach more customers 12, 18, 24 months after they have been released.
We’re seeing customers still get excited about those games and jumping in. For us, that’s working.
Occasionally, there will be an opportunity to invest in a day-and-date [release] like Stray, and we will jump on those when they come in.
But for us, letting those [first-party] games go out to the platform outside the service first… that’s working and that will continue to be our strategy moving forward.”
Unfortunately, Maguire didn’t want to comment if actually gamers are pressuring to adopt a Day One release scheme as Xbox Game Pass, which probably is a hope kill.
So, Playstation gamers wanting Day One releases, seems that the ball is in your court to tell Sony what you want and stop them from justifying with data at convenience.
