After many weeks of expectations, Sony has finally opened the curtain to present what the so-called Project Spartacus was all about and apparently a late past weekend leak was not the actual thing at the end.

The expected answer to Xbox Game Pass (and Ultimate) is a three tier offering that will diversify PS Plus depending on the gaming needs for Playstation users.

The tiers are:

  • PS Plus Essential ($9.99 monthly/$59.99 yearly) - Multiplayer access, two monthly downloadable games, discounts, and cloud storage for game saves…Hence as currently the service is today and I am glad is not being labeled as “legacy” and to be honest, I was expecting a “We are Sony, you are with us or you are against us” attitude that would limit and force people on getting on the other tiers.
  • PS Plus Extra ($14.99 monthly/$99.99)- All Essential offering + 400 games that includes PS4 and PS5 titles.
  • PS Plus Premium ($17.99 monthly/$119.99 yearly) - All Extra offering + 340 additional games between PS3, PS2, original Playstation and PSP that can be downloaded and be played vía streaming and the PS3 games will only be Streaming.

Unfortunately, I was hoping that Sony would reveal a big portion of the catalog but only mentioned Death Stranding, Marvel’s Spider-man, Marvel’s Spider-man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11 and Returnal.

But, something that it was good to be completely clear on day 1 is that newly launched Playstation games will not reach the subscription day one, but months or a year after launch. Other games will be rotating out of Extra and Premium memberships periodically.

Evidently, it should not be surprising that Sony acknowledge it that PS Plus Premium can be offered full throttle in some markets, specially streaming capacity (Google, Nvidia, Amazon and Microsoft hasn’t expanded entirely their respective game streaming services).

With that, Sony created a special tier called PlayStation Plus Deluxe in those particular markets that will let them download the offering of Premium and a lower cost.

The new PS Plus offerings will be deployed in principal markets as soon as June and the transaction is expected to last late this year and when everything goes online, PS Now will be phased out and will be retired from the market.
