Sony feels ready to have the Playstation 5 truly display its graphical processing power with the activation of the VRR or Variable Refresh Rate via firmware update that will be launching sometime this week.
Variable Refresh Rate in simple speaking, is a technique in graphical processing that enables a system to reduced latency times with an algorithm that allows better image quality and less screen tearing by constantly refreshing sync and despite this sounds like “extra duty for a GPU”, in reality produces smoothly images and reduce latency even further.
Better yet, think of it as a Playstation’s answer to Nvidia’s G-Sync or AMD’s FreeSync if you are more familiar with those.
The bad news and not in your control is that the functionality assumes that you have TVs and monitors that are HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible and these games will need to be individually patched to make use of VRR.
The last part is up to developers to adopt the functionalities via APIs and should be no surprise if many games from Playstation Studio are already scheduled to have updates this week so, be ready.
But fortunately, these games will be ready with VRR support and includes:
- Astro’s Playroom
- Call of Duty: Vanguard
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- Deathloop
- Destiny 2
- Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
- DIRT 5
- Godfall
- Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
- Resident Evil Village
- Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
- Tribes of Midgard
