There is another highlight on CD Projekt Red’s parent company report to its investor as part of the financial performance of Q1 and is the first update of everything that has been done to prepare the development of the next The Witcher game.
As previously confirmed, The Witcher next game will not be developed by in-house Red Engine and instead will go for Unreal Engine 5 as part of the strategic partnership with Epic Games.
The new details is that the game was in a Research phase since 2021 and by the end of Q1 2022, CD Projekt Red entered at the pre-production phase, assigning tasks to more than 100 developers that are NOT external people, hired directly for CD Projekt Red.
Also, the reason for forgoing its Red Engine for the first time is that The Witcher new game will have an open world in mind and the results needs to be as scalable as possible since day one and apparently, Red Engine was refocused to have Cyberpunk 2077 as priority.
Developers are also creating their own toolsets based off Unreal Engine 5 and this kind of process is to ensure that the game development gains some autonomy and not depend all the time from Unreal Engine 5 default toolsets.
With this, there are no more details shared for and outside the investors call so, we are still way behind the road when CD Projekt Red is ready to share more details as if this a soft reboot with a new Witcher, Geralt’s newest journey and release date window.
CD Projekt Red is also researching a new IP for a future game as well a spinoff of both Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher adn a spinoff of the GWENT card game.
