For those who had followed Magic The Gathering and Wizards Of The Coast news, will remember that in 2021 Wizard Of The Coast founded its own gaming studio to properly control narrative and design on video games based on their franchises including Magic The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons.
But here we are at the dawn of 2023 and Jason Schreier of Bloomberg reported that the gaming studios have been in the middle of changes due to the shift of Wizards Of The Coast ‘s priorities and this includes canceling projects.
While it is not known the heights of the restructuring affecting both Otherside Entertainment and Hidden Path Entertainment, the company will evidently no longer commit to the “7 or 8” games that previously claimed was in development and the canceled games quantity might fall on 5 projects, most of the for the Dungeons & Dragons franchise.
Otherside Entertainment's main project was a massively simulation game and Hidden Path Entertainment was working on a main game for Dungeons and Dragons that was aimed to be an open world game.
In a statement, Wizards Of The Coasts did not deny the restructuring and while not mentioning any particular project or studio, did acknowledge that they had managed to limit layoff up to 15 working positions but those affected will be offered a new job elsewhere in the company.
The shift of focus, as stated, responds to ensure priority to games that do align strategically to current existing brands.
It is expected that Baldur Gate 3, developed by Larian Studio (not related to Wizards Of The Coast), goes for a stable release in Fall 2023.
