Early weekend, Chinese gaming conglomerate NetEase decided to use its wallet again to buy another gaming studio in its quest to be a big front against colleague and competitor Tencent Games and this time, a studio currently working with some importants Xbox Game Studio projects.
NetEase Games announced that it has acquired Canadian studio SkyBox Labs for an undisclosed sum.
SkyBox Labs was founded on Burnaby and Victoria by 2011 nad has been known for creating games like TASTEE: Lethal Tactics and Stela, but have been in deep co-developing project and features of other studios’ games including 343 Industries with Halo Infinite, Mojang with Minecraft, Microsoft Gaming with Age Of Empires and EA Sport UFC.
So, definitely with this current and past resume, it was no brainer for NetEase to go ahead with the competition if they were having the same idea.
After the closure of the transaction, SkyBox will be a subsidiary maintaining its independence on decisions including, the co-founders Shyang Kong, Derek MacNeil and Steven Silvester, keeping leadership.
