A day prior the Playstation Showcase, the main event of what’s next for Playstation and Playstation 5 for 2023 and onwards, Sony ran its annual Investors day, called this year Sony Business Segment Meeting and yes, we are going to focus on everything Playstation.

Under the Game and Network Services Segment of the Sony Business Segment Meeting 2023, Jim Ryan took the lead to present the current and future status of the Playstation business, for years, an unexpected new core business for Sony as a whole conglomerate.

There are three main things that I want to highlight (not in chronological order) and is the benchmarking with the market, PC gaming venture and what is outside of gaming with Playstation Productions with Gran Turismo and Twisted Metal as the latest entrants respectively in theaters and television (via Peacock).

While some may argue that Playstation 5 is not the most operating income producer, it does have the first place on net sales with 3,6445 billion yen or around 2.62 billion US dollars as of the end of Fiscal Year 22 surpassing all its predecessors.

Sony suggests that things could have been better if it wasn't for COPVID-19 and the subsequent supply chain distortion that was declared “resolved” by December 2023 and finally, Sony claims that the Playstation 5 has equalled or surpassed PS4 by early this year.

While there have been better days, Sony claims that it is on top of the “Other Brands”, being their best period in Q3 2020, they acknowledge Brand B (Nintendo) as their closest competitor, but as you can see in the chart, Brand C (Xbox) has been on the rise.

OBvious at this point, Sony has acknowledged that "PC has grown to become a substantial part" of the PlayStation business thanks to the acquisition of Bungie, Spider-Man on PC and The Last of Us Part 1 and despite noise that Playstation might take it easy with future release due the initial performance of the PC version of the remake of The Last Of Us Part 1, the company expect that this year, PC Playstation games reach the $450 million in revenue.

Talking about Bungie, Playstation is still developing more in-house Live Services and foresee Bungie as a partner for other companies rather than exclusively make games only for Playstation as it was originally promised that Bungie was an independent subsidiary with no exclusive obligation to make Playstation games.

There are 12 Live Services in development as of the presentation and Bungie is actually reviewing the development with a "rigorous" process and are aimed to be released during Fiscal Year 2025.

No details on what the game or which franchise they belong to were shared.

Jim Ryan did mentioned about Playstation Cloud Gaming offering and he said:

"The cloud will be fundamental to allow us... to exploit that trend of mobility. We do have some fairly interesting and quite aggressive plans to accelerate our initiatives in the space of the cloud that will unfold over coming months."

Reminding you that the high tier of PS Plus subscriptions offer support of PS3 games via Cloud Gaming but for some reason, is not has been a high attractive to lure more subscriber, specially former Google Stadia players or those who feels that Game Pass Cloud is not enough and pretty much the medium tier is doing a better job.

PS Plus is significantly up on pre-revamp figures at ¥118.9 billion (up from ¥104.4 billion last year), but I have to highlight here that these numbers include advertisement revenue which probably Sony needed to boost the number by mixing those metrics.

On PSVR2,  Sony shared sales figures for the first time, revealing during a business webcast that PSVR2 sold around 600,000 units during its first six weeks of availability or in other words, PSVR2 improved by 8% the equivalent of time against its predecessor, the original PSVR.

Finally, there is a lot of talking of Playstation ventures in no-gaming fashion and the presentation served as a reminder that there is a Ghost Of Tsushima movie in production and also, Playstaiton is expanding with a first Theme Park attraction based on Uncharted and we might see more Playstation centered products from Spin Master, Lego and high class brands.
