Besides the newest blow by Nintendo against emulation and game preservation, another big noise in the gaming industry this past weekend, was a potential big acquisition by Sony to have another member for the Playstation Studios family, and it was polish CD Projekt Red.
But the makers of The Witcher and Cyberpunk games dismissed the rumors in their earning report for Q1 2023 with CEO Adam Kiciński elaborating:
“Nothing has changed in our end.
So, I can repeat what we have been saying throughout the years – CD Projekt is not for sale.
We want to remain independent. We have, I believe an excellent strategy. Not easy to execute, for sure, but it’s very exciting to follow our own path. So it’s a pure rumour.”
There is some pro Playstation gamers that were thrilled about the rumor as CD Projekt Red is already with a busy schedule with 5 The Witcher games in development (Project Canis Majoris as the remake of the first The Witcher games, Project Sirius as a new conceptual The Witcher game and Project Polaris the next main trilogy of The Witcher), a new Cyberpunk spinoff/sequel (Project Orion) and a new IP as Project Hadar.
Of course this sounds sweet all this games named including the "Only For Playstation" banner.
Unfortunately not this time.
This rumor was started by sources of Liz a known Destiny leaker with a good record on filtering rumors that turns to be fact and explain why many people in the Internet, especially Playstation fans, were eager for a confirmation.
As for Q1 2023, CD Projekt Red reported that it made 175 million PLN (approximately 41 million USD) and a consolidated net profit of 70 million PLN (around 16 million USD). The largest contribution to these impressive sales came from Cyberpunk 2077, which continues to play a significant role in CD Projekt’s financial success, similar to earlier periods.
On achievements news, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has surpassed 50 million copies sold worldwide which were boosted thanks to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt‘s next-gen console release. Adding the sales of the previous two installments, the entire Witcher trilogy has now sold over 75 million copies.
