Dragon Ball FighterZ was the clone of a Marvel Vs Capcom-esque game we always wanted but if Capcom was not up to do it, then Arc System Work did the task and gave Dragon Ball a new life within the FGC.
But probably Dragon Ball FighterZ will NOT be the last of its kind for a while if I were to interpret ASW's CEO Minoru Kidooka on their post EVO interview with IGN.
"We need to expand fighting [game] communities through IP. In the future, if we have such an opportunity, we are actively pushing to collaborate with new IP owners.
In the long run, [my dream] is to develop a new Arc System Works IP planned and developed in the US."
So while we can expect more collaborations that bring us more Granblue, Persona, One Piece, and maybe a Dragon Ball FighterZ's sequel, Arc System Works is aiming to appeal on western audiences for their next big project.
It is fascinating this mindset because western fighting games are actually NOT THE FORTÉ of the Western side of Gaming and fans always depended on great Japanese and japanese-based franchises (isn't that right Street Fighter & Tekken?).
But hold your horses if you think that Arc System Works is going for an outside licensing frenzy and forget about organic games as there are plans for BlazBlue becoming part of "the new generation of fighting games" and be expanded into different genres beyond fighting games.
