As expected, Nintendo first theater venture since the Super Mario Bros. movie from early 90’s and having more direct creative control instead of a Hollywood studio, led to an impressive debut of The Super Mario Bros. Movie this Easter weekend.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie closed its first weekend with an estimated $204.6 million in 5-day opening domestically and $377.2 million worldwide for the complete weekend, making the movie breaking three records already.

This makes The Super Mario Bros. Movie the greatest opener for an animated feature in movie history beating Frozen 2’s opening weekend (and this include all Imax history so far) with also, the record of the best game adaptation overtaking Sonic The Hedgehog 2, which took the reign from Warcraft and finally, the movie landed instantaneously in 3rd place of biggest Easter weekend just behind Batman VS Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Fast 7.

Breaking the numbers down, 38% percent of The Super Mario Bros. Movie weekend domestic box office came from Imax, PLF, motion seats, and 3D screens making 15%.

A quick and unrequired non-spoiling review

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was indeed a success not only because Shigueru Miyamoto input, but also being the gateway of any outside contribution, mainly Illumination and this was seen in the good use of lore of the Mario franchise up to Super Mario Odyssey (AND I MEAN ALL if you are a good observer and know Mario COMPLETE history which include a pre NES era) and pretty much the minimal "touches" of Hollywood IS A GOOD THING regardless of Hollywood thinking the contrary.
