For some, this was a matter of time, but after many gaming companies not compromising and/or blatantly confirming that they will not appear at this year’s E3 and the disturbing silence from original organizers Electronic Software Association and outsourced managers for 2023 edition ReedPop… the apparently inevitable happened.
While not publicly acknowledging, the ESA has just given up on bringing E3 this year as IGN heard that there are internal communications shared to partners to share the news.
Almost a 30 year history and easily the last 5 have been a constant challenge where the ESA resisted the changes and economics that the internet brought and basically maintained the same in-person conference format and that CHARGES participant time slots in the main stage.
2023 in particular was a big one as the E3 have been on of the biggest casualties of the pandemic and ESA pretended to have ReedPop managing thing for this year being a not only a in-person event, but to return to their original roots of being business-to-business platform like in the early days.
Evidently we expect to hear more and a public stance from ESA regarding the long-term future of E3, but probably this is bad for the reputation of ReedPop as the company is known to actually avoid all the apparent problems that was building up organizing E3.
UPDATE - Exceprts of the email:
"This was a difficult decision because of all the effort we and our partners put toward making this event happen, but we had to do what’s right for the industry and what’s right for E3. We appreciate and understand that interested companies wouldn’t have playable demos ready and that resourcing challenges made being at E3 this summer an obstacle they couldn’t overcome. For those who did commit to E3 2023, we’re sorry we can’t put on the showcase you deserve and that you’ve come to expect from ReedPop’s event experiences."
UPDATE 2 - Now it is official:
